About Pinakothek der Moderne

It is listed at Barer Str. 40, 80333 München-Maxvorstadt, which places it among the local businesses of München that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by. Besides its main category, the business also describes itself as kunstgalerie, museum, sehenswürdigkeit, so it may cover more than the name suggests.

Entertainment and cultural venues fill up at weekends, on public holidays and during school holidays, so check opening times and book tickets ahead where possible. Most museums close on Mondays, many state theatres and opera houses pause over the summer, and the Kulturpass gives 18-year-olds a budget to spend on culture. Calling ahead is the norm in Germany for reservations and for confirming that a small business is open that day; e-mail or WhatsApp is the common alternative if you would rather write than speak. Customers rate it 4.5 out of 5 on Google across 9,779 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded museen & galerien in München.

München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around München is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

A real WOW! A huge museum, filled with modern art and design (automotive, interior, etc). It’s like welding Tate Modern and the V&A and the Design Museum together. Whether you fancy Picasso, Magritte, Flavin and Richter, or you’re more in the mood for old Volkswagens, Bauhaus furniture and exquisite glassware, you’ll find loads to love. I could easily have spent half a day there, making the €10 entrance fee good value. And I’m obsessed with the roof!

This was my second visit, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. A very open and comfortable museum, both indoors and outdoors. I especially enjoyed the impressive scale of the architecture — the high ceilings and generous spaces somehow make you feel small in front of art and design, in a good way. The museum brings together design, architecture, and contemporary art, so you can experience different forms of art and creativity all in one visit. I also really liked Flux, the open cultural space next to the museum. It feels genuinely welcoming and accessible to everyone. You can bring your own food and spend time there, and there is also plenty of space for children to play. It makes the whole museum feel not only like a place to see art, but also a place where people can simply spend time together.

I visited here on a Thursday afternoon. The museum has an excellent collection of modernism and contemporary art across a wide range of artists, especially german artists. The rooms are well laid out with an explanation to theme of each room. However theres a lot of security with nearly one guard per room which can be off putting. The reception staff werent very helpful or welcoming. The other areas of the museum like the design section are interesting but personally it was not for me. Toilets were clean.

Large place, lots to see. Modern art is exhibited thematically - not my preference but it is OK and generally makes sense. The building is beautiful. Staff is very friendly. Atmosphere is pleasant. The agriculture exhibitions is detailed and informative.

We visited on a weekday and paid €10 per person. The museum is large, with many exhibits and several interesting exhibitions. Personally, I prefer classical art, and some modern artworks did not impress me. However, there are also valuable works by famous artists such as Picasso, Dalí, and Kandinsky. Overall, it was an enjoyable visit, and the museum is worth seeing if you are interested in modern art.
