About Alte Pinakothek

For a night out or a family day in München, venues like this one are best checked for opening times and events on the day itself, since programmes change. The season matters: beer gardens open from April into October, Christmas markets run through Advent, and open-air cinemas and festivals fill the summer. U-Bahn and S-Bahn services run through the night at weekends in the big cities, with night buses elsewhere, so plan the trip home.
Opening hours are published for 6 days a week. On most of those days it is open 10 am–6 pm. Note that it does not open on Monday. Hours in Germany do change around public holidays, and many businesses close for a day or two over Christmas and Easter, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is 089 23805216. Calling ahead is the norm in Germany for reservations and for confirming that a small business is open that day; e-mail or WhatsApp is the common alternative if you would rather write than speak. More information is available on its website, pinakothek.de.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 13,491 reviews, which is a strong result for a museen in München and suggests consistent service.
München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

It’s a place where I recommend to take your time. Listen to the audio guide and indulge the marvelous art and history. I roamed around 4 hours to the halls and loved the old masters. Especially during the week sonnig much traffic, you can really enjoy the visit. For me as a photographer the old masters are the base of perspective, of guiding lines and shadows and light. Looking at some of their art, I am stunned how they could create such beautiful art. Lucky me, at the moment the New Pinakothek is under Renovation so some of the younger masters, are duplexes here. Degas Cézanne, Monet Manet Van Gogh were greeting me too.

It's a nice inexpensive museum with a lot of beautiful art. I would say that most of pictures are with religious motifs. There's also some Van Gogh's. Completely worth the price. Service was also fast.

The Alte Pinakothek, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious art galleries, is a Neoclassical masterpiece designed by Leo von Klenze. Its grand halls house an extraordinary collection of European Old Masters spanning the 14th to 18th centuries. The museum’s crown jewel is arguably the Rubens Collection, featuring the monumental Last Judgment. Another indispensable highlight is Albrecht Dürer’s Self-Portrait, where the artist depicts himself with Christ-like solemnity, marking a pivotal moment in Northern Renaissance humanism. Additionally, the ethereal works of Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci offer a sublime window into the Italian High Renaissance. Wandering through these expansive, light-filled galleries, I felt a deep sense of historical continuity. Seeing the brushstrokes of Dürer and Rubens in person creates an intimate bridge across centuries. The experience left me humbled by the sheer scale of human creativity and the enduring power of art to capture the divine, the dramatic, and the deeply personal, all within a single silent frame.

Very beautiful collection with pieces from many different centuries. There are many different subjects to admire and I recommend you spend at least 1.5 hours for a leisurely visit. There are seats in almost every gallery if you want to take a break. I recommend visiting on a Sunday so you can take advantage of the €1 admissions and go to several museums.

We didn’t expect to find such an extraordinary collection of some of the world’s most famous paintings in the Alte Pinakothek. The richness and quality of the exhibits are truly impressive. Seeing masterpieces like Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Rubens’ self-portrait is already breathtaking in itself, but the museum offers so much more. The collection spans several centuries of European painting, with outstanding works from artists such as Dürer, Rembrandt, etc. The building itself has a calm and balanced atmosphere, which allows you to fully focus on the artworks without feeling overwhelmed. The layout is clear and well-organized, making it easy to navigate even though the collection is vast. It’s a place where you can slow down, take your time, and really immerse yourself in art history. And as a final note, being able to experience such a world-class collection for just 1 euro on weekends feels like a true gift. A truly outstanding museum and an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in classical painting.
