München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around München is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) is a must see in downtown Munich. The architecture is absolutely gorgeous and immaculate. The intricate stone work is breathtaking at the incredible scale of the building. On the hour the clock chimes out on an incredible show with so many moving parts, but be careful as it gets very busy around these times as seen in the video. I would definitely recommend going early in the morning so you have space to move around, especially with the potential for pickpockets. The area also has great food and shopping to check out when you’re done marvelling at this incredible building. All in all this is one of those “must see” places in the city.

This is absolutely the most beautiful, detailed, and majestic building I have ever seen. In my personal opinion, it surpasses the cathedral in Milan. I definitely recommend visiting to appreciate its scale and level of detail.

We reached Marienplatz just before 5:30 PM and were glad we did. As the clock struck, the famous Glockenspiel came to life, with moving figures telling a story from Munich's history. Watching the show against the backdrop of the beautiful New Town Hall made the experience even more special. The building itself is stunning, with its Gothic-style architecture, intricate details, and fairytale-like appearance. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply soaking in the atmosphere of the city, this is a place you shouldn't miss when visiting Munich.

Standing as the centerpiece of Marienplatz, the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) is a masterpiece of Flemish Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed between 1867 and 1908, its most striking feature is the ornate facade adorned with intricate stone carvings of Bavarian dukes, kings, and legendary figures. The 85-meter-high tower dominates the skyline, housing the famous Glockenspiel, where mechanical figurines re-enact 16th-century Bavarian history to the delight of onlookers. Its soaring pinnacles and pointed arches evoke a sense of vertical grandeur, characteristic of the era's romanticized view of medieval design. Beyond the stones and gears, the Neues Rathaus breathes with the soul of Munich. It is more than a seat of administration; it is a silent witness to centuries of celebration and struggle. Watching the evening light dance across its limestone gargoyles, one feels a profound connection to the resilient spirit of the local people—a bridge between a proud, storied past and the vibrant, welcoming city of today.
