München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Standing proudly at the very center of Munich’s Marienplatz, the Mariensäule (Mary's Column) is much more than a beautiful golden landmark; it is a profound monument of resilience, gratitude, and powerful storytelling. Erected in 1638 by Elector Maximilian I, this magnificent column was built to celebrate the city surviving the Swedish occupation during the devastating Thirty Years' War, as well as being spared from the plague. Atop the tall marble pillar stands the radiant, golden statue of the Virgin Mary, revered here as the 'Patrona Bavariae' (Protector of Bavaria), resting peacefully on a crescent moon. However, the true historical fascination lies at the base of the column. There, you will find four exquisite bronze putti fighting fearsome beasts. Each creature is a striking symbol of a tribulation the city overcame: a fierce lion representing war, a mythical basilisk for the plague, a dragon symbolizing hunger, and a snake representing heresy. The level of detail and the deeply embedded symbolism in this 17th-century masterpiece are absolutely captivating. Even in the midst of the bustling modern square, taking a moment to study the intricate design of the Mariensäule offe

Beautiful Central town area. Easily assessible from metro station from my ibis hotel. Many old gothic buildings mixed with modern buildings. Tourists everywhere taking in the sights, sound and smell...of freshly baked buns and breads. Coming from an Asian country, the old buildings feel very special and unique. In the middle of town, the tall column top with a golden statue feel special to this place. The shops were special and beautiful too.

Mariensäule in Marienplatz is a popular and beautiful landmark in Munich, with the golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing proudly atop the column. It’s a great spot for photos, but there are some downsides to the experience. The area around the statue can get quite crowded, and there is a fence surrounding the statue which can obstruct the view and make it more difficult to capture the perfect shot. The constant flow of tourists and street performers can also create a bit of a frenzy, which may affect the overall atmosphere. If you’re looking to take a clear and peaceful photo, it’s best to visit early in the morning or later in the evening when the crowds are smaller. Despite these factors, Mariensäule remains a lovely spot to visit, though the fence and busy surroundings can impact your experience.
