For public services in Bayern, confirm which office handles your matter and what to bring before you travel, since the Bürgeramt, the Ausländerbehörde and the Finanzamt deal with different paperwork. Stations and airports post timetables on site and in the DB Navigator app, and it is wise to allow extra time at the start of the school holidays and around Christmas, when the whole country is on the move.

Opening hours are published for 7 days a week. The most common schedule is 9 am–8 pm. Hours in Germany do change around public holidays, and many businesses close for a day or two over Christmas and Easter, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is 089 24216890. Calling ahead is the norm in Germany for reservations and for confirming that a small business is open that day; e-mail or WhatsApp is the common alternative if you would rather write than speak. Customers rate it 4.7 out of 5 on Google across 1,079 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded kirchen, moscheen & gotteshäuser in München.

München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. For directions in München, Google Maps and the DB Navigator app cover public transport times and walking routes, and most towns have well-marked cycle lanes. Local transport tickets must be bought or validated before boarding, and parking near busy streets is limited and metered.

A breathtaking church in the heart of Munich, right next to Viktualienmarkt. Heilig-Geist-Kirche has a lovely Baroque interior, with beautiful frescoes, ornate decoration and a peaceful atmosphere despite being in such a busy part of the city. Don’t miss this unique church when exploring the old town. An absolute beautiful place to pause, admire the architecture and experience a quieter side of Munich’s historic centre. No admission fee for the visit.

Right next to Viktualienmarkt and very close to Marienplatz, you will find the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heilig-Geist-Kirche). It is the oldest hall church in Munich. It started as a hospital church back in 1271 and became a main parish church in 1844. Inside, there are beautiful artworks from different centuries and a great high altar. The church has four bells: Holy Spirit, Mary, Joseph, and the "Breznreiter" bell, which was added in 2012 to remember a medieval story of a man who gave food to the poor (if you look at the ceiling paintings, you can actually spot a small pretzel hidden there!).

Another beautiful place of worship in München. Despite the ominous all seeing g eye on top of this Church, which was also dotted about inside if you were looking, we wondered into Heilig Geist late on afternoon in early June. The place was quite breathtaking, with one very fine art throughout. The air of the place was correct solemn. A really good place to spend a bit of time and perhaps pray. Free to visit, but a donation is advisable. Highly recommended.

Another beautiful cathedral in old town Munich. Architecture was beautiful and not over the top inside.

The sculpture in the entrance hall gives a clue the grandure of Helig Geist Church and it's imposing baroque architecture. Three high vaulted aisles give rise to an incredibly ornate ceiling and lined with great pictures of the stations of the cross, along with memorials to the local great and the good. Don't miss the font with it's contemporary font cover or the large panelled doors that are surprisingly easy to miss when taking in the wonderous ceilings and altar.

Helig Geist Church, located right next to MarienPlatz, is one of Munich’s most beautiful and historic churches. The architecture is visually astonishing, with impressive baroque-style interiors and intricate ceiling artwork that reflect centuries of craftsmanship. Despite being situated in the busy city center, the church offers a peaceful and serene ambience, perfect for quiet prayers or reflection. The softly glowing scented candles fill the space with a calming fragrance, adding to the spiritual experience. Entry is completely free, making it an easily accessible and worthwhile stop for anyone visiting MarienPlatz.

Steps from Viktualienmarkt, the Church of the Holy Ghost is among Munich’s oldest sacred buildings, first built in the 13th century as part of a hospice. Its Gothic foundations remain, but the interior was transformed in the 18th century into a Rococo masterpiece, with pastel stucco, gilded altars, and ceiling frescoes that sweep across the nave in dramatic color. The church suffered heavy damage during WWII but was carefully restored, preserving its blend of medieval structure and Baroque-Rococo decoration. Look for the bronze memorial to Duke Ferdinand of Bavaria near the entrance, as well as the intricate side chapels that make the space feel more intimate than its lofty ceiling suggests. Amid the bustle of Viktualienmarkt, it’s an easy and worthwhile stop; history, art, and a bit of quiet reflection all under one roof.
