München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around München is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

The formal heart of Nymphenburg’s gardens, a grand axis stretching out from the palace into a symmetrical landscape of gravel paths, clipped hedges, and statues. At its center lies the large basin and fountain structure, first installed in the 18th century, designed to showcase the palace’s harmony between architecture and landscape. Even without the water display, it frames the view perfectly, highlighting the grandeur and symmetry that defined Baroque garden design.

Großes Parterre mit Wasserfontäne @ Munich, Germany 💦🌸🦌🦢 📍 Nymphenburg Palace Gardens, Munich The Großes Parterre is a grand formal garden space stretching out behind Nymphenburg Palace, anchored by its elegant central water fountain. Surrounded by manicured flowerbeds, symmetric lawns, and wide gravel paths, this baroque-style garden offers a regal backdrop for photos and a relaxing walk. During our visit, we spotted deer, geese, and ducks in the garden grounds and surrounding park. The animals added a touch of serenity and charm to the already picturesque setting, especially near the quieter areas of the Schlosspark. The fountain view back toward the palace is breathtaking, and the calm water, combined with occasional wildlife, makes it feel like a peaceful escape right in the heart of the city. 🧭 Tip: Visit in the late afternoon for soft lighting and better chances of spotting wildlife in the open. If you’re with kids or love nature photography, this is a lovely stop. Free entry the garden

Great Parterre is a small section of the Nymphenburg Park just behind the Castle. The grounds are well manicured, symmetric with walkways lined with statues. The Great Parterre extends westward from the Castle to the Nymphenburg Canal, which splits and circles the parterre and castle. Give the area a few minutes of your time after your visit to the Castle, before you further explore the Nymphenburg Park grounds.
