München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "The undisputed capital of 'Where are you?' texts." If you’ve ever tried to meet someone in Munich, you’ve stood here. It's the ultimate central landmark, right in front of the Town Hall. It’s small, always crowded, and has a random bronze fish watching you wait for your chronically late friends. Fun fact: politicians wash their empty wallets here on Ash Wednesday for good financial luck. I threw in a coin and washed my hands; waiting to see if my bank account notices. Great spot to people-watch, get splashed on a hot day, or just map out your next beer hall.

"Chirpy & Cheerful" smaller fountain in Marienplatz that is a popular vantage point to meet up. Fountain is on the right - facing Neuss Rathaus (New Town Hall) which looks ancient compared to Old Town Hall nearby. Fountain & Old Town Hall was extensively damaged in allied bombing in WW2 & was reconstructed. Neuss Town Hall survived with some damage only - as such looks much older. Operating fountain in winter was a welcome sight - usually drained to prevent freeze damage. At the time of visit, fountain was great place near the subway entry to train station to start browsing Christkindlemarkt stalls & festivities. Original fountain dates back centuries when Marienplatz was a marketplace. Fountain reflects this heritage - topped by a fish sculpture on a column with fish motifs & market scenes in the wide circular basin surrounding it.

A lively little fountain with roots dating back to the Middle Ages, though the current design by Josef Henselmann was rebuilt in 1954 after WWII damage. Its bronze figures of butchers and the central fish recall the city’s markets that once bustled in this square. Tradition holds that drinking from the fountain on Ash Wednesday brings good fortune, a quirky custom still kept alive today.

Review of Fischbrunnen, Munich Fischbrunnen, located in Marienplatz, is a charming but modest fountain featuring a sculpture of a fishmonger with his catch. While it holds historical significance, it isn’t as impressive as the grand buildings nearby, such as the New Town Hall or the Glockenspiel. The fountain is a nice spot to pause and enjoy the view, but it can get overshadowed by the more dramatic and iconic landmarks around it. The water feature adds a touch of tranquility to the busy square, though it may not capture the attention of tourists as much as the surrounding architecture.

Fischbrunnen is a small but iconic fountain right in front of the Neues Rathaus at Marienplatz. Though unassuming at first glance, it carries a lot of history and local tradition. The fountain was rebuilt after WWII, preserving its original charm, and today it serves as a popular meeting point for both locals and tourists. A fun fact: every Ash Wednesday, Munich’s bankers and politicians take part in a symbolic “money-washing” ritual here, meant to bring good fortune for the year ahead. The fountain also features bronze fish sculptures, a nod to its historical connection with the city’s fish market. While it may not be the grandest landmark in Munich, Fischbrunnen is a lovely piece of the city’s history and a great spot to take a quick break while exploring Marienplatz. Worth a visit!
