Der Festsaal im ersten Obergeschoss des Alten Rathauses, der auch als Tanzhaus bezeichnet wird, beeindruckt bereits auf den ersten Blick mit seiner kunstvoll verzierten Holzdecke. Der spätgotische Saal mit seinem von Tischlermeister Hans Wengler geschaffenen Tonnengewölbe gilt als eine der architektonischen Meisterleistungen der Münchner Gotik. Weniger bekannt ist, dass der historische Tanzsaal bis heute genutzt wird: Bei besonderen Anlässen finden hier weiterhin festliche Veranstaltungen statt.

Kulturgeschichtlich wohl um einiges bedeutsamer, als das Neue rathaus ist dieses Gebäude Es handelt sich um einen historischen Bau aus dem Mittelalter, der früher als Teil der Stadtbefestigung diente und 1470 bis 1480 errichtet wurde. Im Turm des Gebäudes befindet sich heute das Münchner Spielzeugmuseum. Der Marienplatz ist seit 1158 das historische Zentrum Münchens. Der erste an dieser Stelle errichtete Bau datiert aus 1310 wurde durch Blitzschlag 1460 zum Opfer.

With its roots dating back to 1310, the building has gone through a variety of forms, from Gothic to Baroque and finally to neo-Gothic. It was badly damaged during World War Two; with the magnificent spire being rebuilt in 1971-1974.

Standing at the eastern edge of Marienplatz, the Old Town Hall looks like it stepped out of a fairy tale with its pointed spires and tall clock tower. Originally built in the 14th century, it served as Munich’s city hall until the Neues Rathaus took over in the 19th century. The current Gothic appearance is a reconstruction, as the building was heavily damaged during World War II. Today, the tower houses the Toy Museum (Spielzeugmuseum), which adds a playful twist to the building’s otherwise formal history. The Altes Rathaus isn’t as imposing as its “new” neighbor, but its bright façade and striking tower make it a charming counterpoint on Marienplatz and a reminder of Munich’s medieval roots.
