A really beautiful church, with a central chamber that feels really special. The brickwork was incredible, the aging was clear. This church is a symbol of history, and it was incredible to be within it. If you’re nearby, I cannot recommend it enough. Free entry, normally very quiet.

The Basilica of St. Gereon is one of Cologne’s most fascinating historic churches and a great stop beyond the usual cathedral route. Its origins go back to late Roman and early Christian times, while the current building reflects centuries of Romanesque development. The most striking feature is its rare decagonal central space, which gives the interior a very distinctive and atmospheric feeling. Compared to Cologne Cathedral, it is much quieter, but historically just as interesting. A beautiful place for anyone who enjoys architecture, religious history and hidden gems in Cologne.

A very special and atmospheric church that is definitely worth visiting in Cologne, especially if you want to discover something beyond the cathedral and the usual old-town route. St. Gereon has a very different character: it feels older, quieter, and more unusual. What I especially liked is the architecture. The interior does not feel like a standard church visit, because the shape, dome, stone walls, and historical details create a very distinctive atmosphere. It is a place where you naturally slow down, look upward, and notice how much history is hidden in the building. The church is also a good choice for people who enjoy architecture, history, and calm places away from the busiest tourist streets. It is not as crowded as some other landmarks, which makes the visit feel more personal and peaceful. I found this place with the help of the Penguindor app — the “penguin” that helps you discover interesting places nearby. Thanks to it, I discovered a historical place that I might easily have missed during a normal walk through Cologne. Overall, St. Gereon is a strong recommendation for anyone who wants to see a quieter and more unusual side of Cologne. It is historical, beautifu

St. Gereon's Basilica, is a German-Roman Catholic Church, located in Cologne and dedicated to Saint Gereon. It is dating back to 612 AD. Archbishop Hildebold had a choir added in 800 AD while Archbishop Arnold II von Wied added the apse and tesnsepts in 1151 AD. The ancient mausoleum was sheathed from the outside and elevated with Gothic galleries and a central dome during 1225. Standing in a hill, it is one of the 12 great churches in Cologne, built in Romanesque style, richly furnished once upon a time. The wall cladding is that of Marble and the dome is mosaic. Since 1121 AD the bones of St Gereon are venerated here as a relic. The sacramentary of St. Geregon was made during 1000 AD for a Canon. It has 190 parchment pages of mass prayers, 10 images of salvation historyan, image of Christ enthroned and depiction of Gregory the great. These are now owned by the National Library in Paris. The cloth of St. Gereon is the oldest of the European tapestries. Our visit in 2024, did not allow us to have more than a glimpse of such a memorable building. As usual I wish I had more time in my day., but glad I could atleast see a part of it.

St. Gereon Basilica started as a Roman building around 350 AD and later became one of Cologne’s most unique churches. It's an awesome mix of Romanesque and early Gothic style.

Walking through the streets in Cologne on a rainy day, we stumbled upon this Basilica. This is a beautiful Basilica and we enjoyed the architecture, art and quietness of what this Basilica offers. There is so much of history in Germany and this is one of them. We saw many art depicting Christendom and history of Cologne. It is very peaceful to be here. The atmosphere is very reflective and you can pray and mediate as this is what this church is for. We did not had to pay a fee but to respect this place for what it is. We spent about 45 minutes here and moved on. There is also a write up about this Basilica in the front foyer.
