About Sebalduskirche

Nürnberg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Definitely worth the 5 EUR to see this church. A beautiful church that has been through so much over the years. A must see on your visit in Nürnberg.

Dating back to the 1200s, St. Sebald (Sebalduskirche) is Nuremberg’s oldest parish church, named after the city's patron saint. It stands as a profound monument to the city's spiritual and cultural evolution. Architecturally, it uniquely bridges artistic eras, transitioning seamlessly from a sturdy Romanesque nave to a soaring, light-filled Late Gothic choir. Inside, the magnificent bronze shrine of St. Sebald reflects the height of German Renaissance craftsmanship. Nestled in the northern old town, the church sits adjacent to the historic Old Town Hall, surrounded by atmospheric cobblestone streets and quaint cafes beneath the watchful gaze of the nearby Imperial Castle. More than an architectural landmark, Sebalduskirche evokes a deep sense of human continuity. Having survived the scars of war and time, its quiet, sacred halls invite modern travelers to pause, reflecting on centuries of shared human faith, resilience, and the enduring quest for beauty.

One of the three great churches in Nuremberg. You can get your tickets outside or at the door (5 EUR in summer 2026). They give you a very good map with QR codes for the English explanations of things. But then I got to the remains of St Stebald. There was en English speaking guide was was going through a fascinating analysis of the tomb. At the bottom are snails (12 for the 12 tribes) that are going counter-clockwise to "start" time. On the next level of Greek gods that are. . . kinda doing it wrong. Wisdom is looking at herself in the mirror with her book closed. Justice has her sword but not her blindfold or scales.

This church is absolutely gorgeous. There was no fee to enter, but I did make a small donation. Stunning atmosphere.

Absolutely peaceful and wonderful part of history to explore for a bit. Various art and historical markers from the church are throughout, giving you a chance to see them up close and without any rush. I was lucky enough during my time a sweet woman begin to play what I believe a Baroque flute in period clothing that added extra ambiance to it. The people that work at the desk are just lovely as well and I will be returning again later this week as it is just peaceful inside, even for someone like myself who is not considered religious.

Another fantastic church in the town, well preserved and functional. I arrived when the organ was playing giving a calm and holy atmosphere to the place.

St. Sebald Church is an amazing sight—absolutely stunning architecture and full of history. We visited during the market season, and the entire area was beautiful and full of energy. The church itself is peaceful, majestic, and worth stepping into for a quiet moment or to admire the craftsmanship. A must-see if you’re visiting Nuremberg’s old town!

Absolutely stunning; hands down one of the most beautiful churches I’ve visited in Europe. The twin spires dominate the skyline, but it’s the details that stay with you: Romanesque roots blending seamlessly with soaring Gothic architecture, the intricate stone carvings over the portals, and the rich play of light through centuries-old stained glass. Inside, the space is breathtaking. The high vaulted ceilings lift your eyes upward, while the elaborate tomb of St. Sebald, crafted in dark bronze with remarkable detail, anchors the interior with reverence. Each chapel holds its own story, from altarpieces to frescoes, giving you a sense of both faith and history woven together. What struck me most was the atmosphere; it feels both grand and intimate, a living part of Nuremberg’s heritage rather than just a monument. This is a place to linger, to take in the artistry, and to appreciate how much care and devotion went into creating and preserving it over the centuries.
