München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around München is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

Hirschgarten is one of those places that truly captures the spirit of Munich. It’s a huge, beautiful traditional beer garden surrounded by greenery, and the atmosphere is absolutely wonderful. I really enjoyed the relaxed setting plenty of trees, long communal tables, fresh air and that unmistakable Bavarian beer-garden feeling. It’s a great place to slow down, enjoy a cold beer and have some traditional food with friends or even on your own. The beer was excellent, and the food was hearty, satisfying and exactly what you would expect from a traditional Munich beer garden. The sheer size of the place is impressive, yet it still manages to feel welcoming and relaxed. What I particularly liked is that Hirschgarten feels less like a tourist attraction and more like a genuine local gathering place. It’s perfect for a sunny afternoon or a relaxed evening in Munich. If you’re visiting Munich and want to experience traditional Bavarian beer-garden culture, Hirschgarten should definitely be on your list. Great beer, good food, beautiful surroundings and a fantastic atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Lovely beer garden in the park! You collect your maß from the cupboard and wash/cool in the sink before getting it filled; have a few and enjoy a mackerel smoked on site while watching the deer! Very family vibes, separate BBQ area at the entrance. Short walk from train station (past a Lidl!)

Königlicher Hirschgarten stands as Europe’s largest beer garden, a historic oasis of Bavarian tradition dating back to 1780. Nestled in a lush Munich park, its true hallmark is the two-hectare wildlife enclosure right next to the seating area, where majestic fallow deer roam freely. Visitors can enjoy fresh Augustiner beer drawn from traditional wooden casks alongside classic hearty local delicacies while observing these gentle creatures, blending a lively community hub with a peaceful sanctuary of nature. Sitting beneath the ancient chestnut trees, watching children feed the deer while generations of locals share tables, evokes a deep sense of harmony. It is a beautiful reminder of how urban life and the natural world can coexist, preserving a timeless, warm human connection.

We'd never been to a beer garden before, so it took some figuring out. It was a very lively place and everyone was friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and fast with lots to choose from. The deer we're a nice touch as well.
