About Backstern Cafe

Backstern Cafe is a bäckereien in München, Bayern. It is listed at Leopoldstraße 259, 80807 München, which places it among the local businesses of München that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by. Besides its main category, the business also describes itself as café, konditorei, imbiss, so it may cover more than the name suggests.

Eating out in Germany runs from a quick Döner at an Imbiss to a long evening in a Gasthaus, and a listing like this one is best judged on freshness, turnover and how consistent the reviews are rather than on decor. Lunch menus (Mittagstisch) are usually the best value, menu prices already include 19% VAT and service, and many kitchens close between lunch and dinner. Bakeries open early and are the one shop you can count on for a Sunday morning.

The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. The most common schedule is 6 am–3 pm. Note that it does not open on Sunday. As with most places, expect changes around public holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is 089 23717763. Calling ahead is the norm in Germany for reservations and for confirming that a small business is open that day; e-mail or WhatsApp is the common alternative if you would rather write than speak. More information is available on its website, backstern-cafe.de.

With 4.0 out of 5 on Google from 61 reviews, it sits in the middle of the range for bäckereien & konditoreien in München. German customers tend to review sparingly and critically, so a mid-range score with detailed comments is often a fair picture.

München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Good coffee, fruit salad, kirschtasche and yogurt with muesli. I liked the way the muesli was separate from the yogurt so I could mix it in as I liked, not have it already mixed and a bit soggy.

It is centrally located and near a bus stop. Staff is friendly, though need to improve on the English language. Place is clean and neat. The cappuccino was really good, good strong coffee. Had a mozzarella panini which was not really tasty. It was also cold, even though it just got out the warmer. They are also halal, so you could get a nice halal meal or sandwich as well.

The cafe was close to the hotel that we were staying. The service was good but there was no English menu. We used Google translate to translate the menu and what was translated as croissant was delivered as a bread roll. The large breakfast had an unusual Greek salad type assortment of cubed cheese, olives, cucumber and tomato, with olive oil and vinegar to dress. The fried egg that came with the large breakfast was cooked well, with a runny yolk. The small breakfast had an omelette and more rolls - this was disappointing when they have croissants for sale at the counter. Portion sizes were a bit on the small side due to the lack of interest in the bread rolls. The large breakfast was twice the price of the small but I would not say I got twice the amount of food. Overall, it wasn’t the worst experience but not one we wouldn’t repeat.
