About Veste Oberhaus

Passau is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around Passau is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

Excellent views! We took the shuttle up, 5€, it's a bit of a hike otherwise! We walked down, it wasn't too bad to walk down. We had a drink & snack in the cafe. You can only order via a QR code! Definitely worth a visit.

Great views of both Austria and Germany from the Observatory (a steep climb). The museum is small but had very interesting artifacts particularly from the middle ages

This is a great place for a viewpoint of the whole city. There are multiple places with panoramic views in every direction. The entry fee was reasonable and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

There were a lot of stairs to get up to the top but very doable for someone in average fitness. The level of difficulty is about the same as the walk up to Wallfahrtskirche Mariahilf. There are spots to to stop, rest, and catch your breath as well. There are some terrific views along the way and at the top. You can pay to enter the museum but the journey and walking around at the top alone are very nice. You can also catch a bus or a taxi up to the top and it will drop you off behind the fortress.

Veste Oberhaus is one of my favorite stops in Bavaria. The castle complex has so much to offer. There is plenty to see if you do not pay for the admission. There is also so much more to see if you do pay admission. The admission price is nominal and definitely worth it. There is a restaurant called Das Oberhaus that is super. Also, you are permitted to take photos inside of the castle, and this is not permitted at every castle in Bavaria.
