Passau is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around Passau is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

What a great experience

A marvellous market square in front of the cathedral with plenty of benches for you to take a breather after climbing the backstreets up from the river bank. The main shopping street of the old town is through a pedestrian tunnel at the end of the square. Passau is lovely old town. Excellent for just walking around. A long history of flooding between the river Inn & the Danube reminds you of Harpers Ferry in West Virginia.

a large square with a king memorial, and a yard for the Cathedral, surrounded by trees and historical baroque houses.

Just very lovely place to be at Christmas time. There was Christmas market with some real yummy food and drink. And of course there were little shops with x-mas themed items. Since we visited this place on a workday there were not great crowds of people. And if you are in need of pee, there are public toilets

Wonderful Christmas Market, but very crowded in the evening (mostly with locals). St. Stephan's Cathedral is a must-visit, even while it is underling renovations.
