St. Maria Himmelfahrt (St. Mary of the Assumption) church, is located in Cologne, Germany. It is situated in the Altstadt-Nord district, approximately a 3 min walk from the Cologne Central Station (Koln Hauptbahnhof). The church is located very close to the famous Cologne Cathedral (Kolner Dom). The Site was built in the early 17th C, and it is one of the few surviving Baroque architectural monuments in Cologne. While primarily Baroque, it incorporates Romanesque and Gothic elements too, such as its arched ceilings. It is recognized as the city's second-largest church, after the world-famous Cologne Cathedral. The exterior is marked by a light pink facade and two striking bell towers. It is also known for heavy wrought-iron fences both outside and inside. Built for the Jesuits between 1618 and 1629, it served as a significant site for the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The church was almost completely destroyed during World War II Allied air raids. It underwent a meticulous 30-year reconstruction based on original designs, which was completed around 1979. Some original elements survived the war, including the striking Baroque main altar, the pulpit, and the confessionals.

Most people walk past this church without stopping. The facade doesn’t demand attention the way Gothic does. That’s the whole point. St. Mariae Himmelfahrt opened in 1629 — the largest Baroque church in Cologne, built by Jesuits, heavy-bombed in WWII and rebuilt with the kind of patience that’s almost incomprehensible now. What survived and what was restored have blended into something that feels intact rather than reconstructed. The interior is the surprise. The ceiling moves upward in a way that feels deliberate — like the architecture is making an argument about what happens after. The ornamentation is dense but controlled. Nothing is shouting. It’s two minutes from the Cathedral and receives a fraction of the visitors. On a weekday morning it’s nearly empty. That’s when it’s best.

The interior of this church is very beautiful, combining gothic architecture with baroque decorations. It is a shame that the church is always closed to public and one can only admire it through the grille. I tried to visit it many times and even wrote an email to the parish office, but to no avail. This should be changed.

Beautiful church next to the Kölner dom for the Italian community of Köln.

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is the largest church in Cologne after the Cathedral. It opened in 1629 and is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. The church was heavily damaged during World War II but was later carefully rebuilt and restored.

In Germany A old church historical place on the old city road look so beautiful from out side. Very different from inner side. Once it was buried in world war and then reconstruct again. Beautiful paintings and very different architectural look.

Beside the Cologne Cathedral, this is the second nicest church to visit as per my opinion. The door of the inner session was closed when we were there but still could see the amazing baroque interior decors.

St. Mary's Assumption in Cologne The Catholic parish church of St. Mary of the Assumption was after the cathedral for a long time the largest church in Cologne and is one of the few remaining architectural evidence of Baroque in the city. The former collegiate church of the Jesuits, located on Marzellenstraße near the cathedral. It has heavy wrought-iron fences outside and inside. The inside fences prevent you from enjoying the relics.
