For a place to eat or drink in Germany, the questions that matter most are simple: is it open today (many restaurants keep a weekly Ruhetag), does it take reservations for dinner, and does the menu suit your group. Tipping is modest, rounding up or adding 5-10% when you pay, and while cards are accepted in most places, cash is still the safe choice at bakeries, Imbiss stands and beer gardens. Tap water is not served automatically, and bottles you take away carry a Pfand deposit.

The business lists hours on 1 day of the week. The most common schedule is 09:00–18:00. It is closed on Sunday. As with most places, expect changes around public holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is 089 26023156. Calling ahead is the norm in Germany for reservations and for confirming that a small business is open that day; e-mail or WhatsApp is the common alternative if you would rather write than speak. Its website is schmalznudelcafefrischhut.shop, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.

On Google it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 3,369 reviews, which is a strong result for a café in München and suggests consistent service.

München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

You can’t visit Munich without stopping by Schmalznudel - Café Frischhut! The classic, old-school atmosphere makes you feel like you stepped back in time, and the aroma of fresh dough hitting the fryer instantly draws you in. I tried their jam-filled doughnut (Krapfen), and it was absolute perfection—served warm, light, fluffy, and filled with just the right amount of sweet jam. Pairing a hot, fresh pastry here with a cup of coffee is easily one of the best quick bites in the city. A must-visit classic!

We stopped here today on our way to the Viktualienmarket (across the street) after seeing tons of YouTube videos hyping up a couple of their must try items, and I have to say, the food absolutely lived up to it. We had the Schmalznudel and the Krapfen. Both were genuinely delicious and not just social media hype. The space itself is quite small, especially near the entrance, and it felt like a constant flow of people coming and going. The gentleman making the treats was great—big smile, clearly enjoying what he was doing which added to the experience. Unfortunately, the service at the register didn’t match that energy. The woman taking orders was very rushed and not particularly friendly. It was noticeable enough that, even though we really wanted to go back for more, we decided against it just to avoid another interaction. Friendliness really does go a long way. All that said, the food itself is easily 5 stars—just wish the service matched it.

Just arrived in Munich and stumbled upon this gem. The Schmalznudel (local donut) is incredible—served freshly fried and still warm. I opted for no extra sugar, and the sweetness was absolutely perfect for my palate Interestingly, the texture and flavor reminded me so much of Chinese Youtiao or Youbing, but with a unique Bavarian twist. The service lady was exceptionally warm and welcoming, making the experience even better. Definitely put this on your Munich bucket list!

Nice location and a fun experience. You get to watch them making the donuts fresh in the window right at the front of the store. You can pick up donuts there for takeout as well, although it looks like it would be fun to eat there. Right now they have the special spring Easter time filled donuts called krapfen. They are a well-known Munich institution for donuts and were recommended by another local. They are soft, light, and filled with apricot jam. Sadly they are cash only.

Perfect stop for travelers, just a short walk from the main sights and markets. This café is well known for its fried donuts — and they absolutely live up to the hype. It’s usually busy, but the line moves fast. You can order and sit at the outdoor tables, which is a great way to enjoy the Munich vibe while taking a break from sightseeing. The donuts are fresh and delicious, and there’s sugar on the table so you can add as much as you like. So good I could easily eat two. Highly recommended if you’re visiting Munich!
