Augsburg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. For directions in Augsburg, Google Maps and the DB Navigator app cover public transport times and walking routes, and most towns have well-marked cycle lanes. Local transport tickets must be bought or validated before boarding, and parking near busy streets is limited and metered.

This is an exceptional example of what humans can achieve with compassion, determination & enough money. Then you need the following generations to continue the good work. I loved it.

A Great place to visit. A relaxed stroll through the living history of the World's Oldest complex of thoughtful Social housing ...a beautiful idea. You experience respectful, quaint, community like living with multiple Museum like exhibitions to explore...history awaits your visit. €7/8 to enter is reasonable.

Well preserved historical place, survived since 16th century! I enjoyed walking around, even in a cold cold day in winter. They turned some of the apartments into a museum. It is interesting to see that people still live there. Plan at least one hour to see it all! Recommend!

Visiting the Fuggerei was one of the most interesting and quietly moving experiences I had in Augsburg. What makes this place special isn’t just its history, but the fact that it’s still alive — real people still live here today. Walking through the streets, you immediately feel a rare sense of calm. No rush, no noise, just a peaceful rhythm of everyday life inside walls that have stood for centuries. The idea that this social housing project has been functioning continuously since the 16th century is genuinely impressive. Seeing the interiors and learning how people lived — and still live — here makes the concept feel human, not museum-like. It’s a reminder that good design and social responsibility can last for hundreds of years. Quiet, meaningful, and deeply respectful of human dignity.
