The Augustus Fountain (Augustusbrunnen) is one of the Prachtbrunnen (splendid fountains) situated along Maximilianstraße at Rathausplatz. The monument is part of the UNESCO World Heritage recognition for Augsburg's Water Management System. It was the design of Dutch sculptor Hubert Gerhard (1588-1594). For preservation purposes, the monument's original bronzeworks are now housed within the Maximilianmuseum. What you see today are highly detailed replicas. These include the central bronze figure of Emperor Augustus depicted at age 50 in military attire, raising his right arm as he looks up at Rathaus across the street. Augustus stands on a highly ornate pedestal adorned with nymphs and cherubs with dolphins from which water spouts into the ground level basin below. Surrounding the basin are four additional bronzes of water deities representing the Lech, Wertach, Singold and artificial Brunnenbach rivers that form Augsburg's primary water source. In the end, this is a very detailed and interesting fountain monument, one well worth spending a few minutes to view and learn about while sightseeing around the Old Town.

a fountain from the 16th century with the bronze figure of the roman emperor Augustus. it decorates the square next the Perlach tower and the Rathaus. All three are work of the talented Elias Holl.
