It’s in the middle of Schildergasse — Cologne’s busiest shopping street — and it’s easy to miss entirely because your brain is already in retail mode. Antoniterkirche is a Lutheran church, which makes it quietly unusual in this very Catholic city. It was heavily damaged in WWII and the rebuilding included new stained glass installed in 1966, designed by Alois Plum. The windows are worth stopping for: the colors are not what you expect from a medieval-looking exterior. The piece that stays with you is Ernst Barlach’s “Der Schwebende” — a bronze angel suspended from the ceiling, arms outstretched, weightless. It was originally a war memorial. In this location, between the shoppers and the noise outside, it reads as something more unresolved than that. The courtyard has a small café. Sit there for ten minutes before rejoining the crowd.

Amazing inside, beautiful ceiling and stained glass. Interesting sculpture for both World Wars. Shame you can appreciate the space too much, as you can here busking musicians from outside busy shopping area..

A beautiful old church right by Schildegasse, the shopping district. Has a lot of fine details and architecture, albeit not being the largest church in Cologne.

Newly renovated little church in the middle of the pedestrian zone. Was lucky to walk past on the last Sunday of the month, when they have an eucumenical evening prayer at 18:00. Beautiful music and good fellowship. Well worth checking out if you happen to be around for it. Everything seems to be in German though.

AKA Church of St Anthony. Lovely church I found in the shopping district. During WWII the church sustained severe damage. I enjoyed the different stain glass they have compared to others. It was installed in 1966 and the designer was Alois Plum. The baptismal dates to the 12th century. They did save the chior window from 1520. Stop by worth it.

Striking simple interior, very calm feel. Went to see Barlach's angel. The angel is wonderful, both in its design and history. Nice little souvenir shop.
