Wine lover’s paradise! And then not just German, but specialty Austrian labels, many of which unique. Paired with simple, but very tasty food (trout!) makes it a combination well worth a detour. Highly commended!

What an amazing place to have dinner. I have been twice and both times I have enjoyed delicious food with really nice wines. The owners and the staff are super helpful and are always there for great suggestions. They also have a lot of natural wine on their menu which is rare in Koln! Will be back soon.

We first discovered Essers on Aschermittwoch 2019 and are devoted fans ever since. A fruitful German-Austrian collaboration, they know about food but rather than with pretense they serve it with pleasure. Their leafy summer terrace is dreamlike - sit there, ask Iris about the wine, have a glass, have a bottle. Sunday is the Schnitzeltag and every first Thursday of the month we are having Backhendl, or juicy fried chicken in the most crispiest coating, another Austrian classic. We also love their trout and the pork neck steak coming all the way from Styria. Sometimes unexpected specials appear on the menu from not so typical fishes to offal. The cheese selection is always a treat or if you want to wrap up your dinner on the sweet side ask for the Marillenpalatschinken (pancakes with apricot marmalade) and they will flambee one directly in front of you. You can clap your hands if you want, no one is judging. Later you can take home some of the same marmalade or another specialty like Styrian pumpkin seeds oil. Don't forget your warm memories too.

The staffs are very friendly. It’s like a family restaurant giving me the feeling of eating at someone‘s house. Every first Thursday is chicken day which they only serve fried chicken as the only main dish that day. Just as you can see in the picture, the dish for one person is 4 different parts of the chicken and potato salad. The fried chicken and salad were both nice and tasted good. However, it‘s a little pricy for fried chicken. But still a nice meal and good experience. Btw, it seems they serve many different kinds of wines. I’m not a fans of wine, so that’s not really something important or special for me. But if you’re a wine lover, then maybe it would be different for you.
