I am completely in love with their permanent collection, especially the incredible works by the Blue Rider group. Seeing Wassily Kandinsky’s paintings in person is an unforgettable experience. Plus, their temporary exhibitions never disappoint—I’ve checked out two of them so far, and they were both amazing in their own unique ways. Definitely worth a visit!

Wonderful quiet museum with many great works. I really enjoyed many rooms. Unfortunately the itinerary is not clear and I had to go back to the museum twice after the exit because I realized that I had not visited all rooms

Amazing gallery, really enjoyed visiting here. It’s free first Thursday of every month and features a lot of abstract art. They even have free postcard designs, and there is a cute little garden with water fountains and sculptures.

The Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich is a brilliant fusion of historical grandeur and avant-garde innovation. Originally the 19th-century Tuscan-style villa of the "painter prince" Franz von Lenbach, it was spectacularly expanded by architect Norman Foster with a shimmering golden-copper wing. This architectural masterpiece serves as the guardian of the world’s most extensive collection of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), featuring revolutionary works by Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, and Franz Marc. Masterpieces like Marc’s Blue Horse I radiate with a spiritual energy that redefined modernism. Stepping from the ornate, darkened rooms of the historic villa into the light-flooded, minimalist galleries of the "Kunstbau" creates a visceral sense of transition. Standing before the vibrant, expressive canvases of the Blue Rider, I felt a deep surge of optimism. These works represent a bold break from tradition—a celebration of inner freedom that still feels startlingly alive today. Leaving the gallery, I was struck by how art can serve as a bridge, connecting the weight of history with the boundless possibilities of the future.

We didn’t actually go inside the museum, but we spent some time exploring the free garden and it was absolutely beautiful. It felt like a peaceful little escape right in the middle of the city. The grounds are so well kept, with lots of flowers, greenery, and quiet spots to sit and take it all in. You can tell a lot of care goes into maintaining it. Even without visiting the exhibits, it was worth stopping by just to enjoy the atmosphere. The garden has a really calm, welcoming energy—perfect for a stroll, a coffee break, or just relaxing in the sun. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something to do in Munich that doesn’t cost anything but still feels special. Next time we’re definitely planning to go inside the museum, but for now, the garden alone made the visit worthwhile.
