Near the Residenz in Würzburg if you are interested in modern church architecture the sankt Johannis Kirche is a must. The nick name Batman church is understandable but let it not hinder to visit. It is an impressive building. Impressive from the outside and from the inside with a beautiful play of light.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Diese Kirche hat mich kalt erwischt. Im besten Sinne. Ich lauf da so durch Würzburg, kurz vor der Residenz, und plötzlich stehen da diese beiden Türme. Spitz, schlank, irgendwie kühn. Im ersten Moment dachst du: Nachkrieg, Beton, na ja. Und dann stehst du davor und merkst, dass du einfach nicht weitergehst. Was Architekt Reinhard Riemerschmid hier 1957 hingestellt hat, ist eigentlich verrückt: Die Ruine des alten neugotischen Turms von 1895 steckt noch mittendrin. Der Eingang führt durch das Portal des zerstörten Vorgängerbaus. Und das neue Mauerwerk ringsum? Da stecken die Trümmer der alten Kirche drin, die 1945 fast vollständig ausgebombt wurde. Altes Material, neue Form. Das ist kein Kompromiss und keine Verlegenheitslösung, das ist eine Haltung. Innen dann dieser klare Einraum. Sieben Stahlbetonträger, die das Dach halten und ihm dieses zeltartige, irgendwie schwebende Gefühl geben. Kein Zierrat, kein Überangebot an Jahrhunderten, die sich gegenseitig übertönen. Nur dieser ruhige Raum, der Altarbereich, und dieses Kreuz, das da vorne steht und den ganzen Blick auf sich zieht. A unique interior that stands out in Würzburg’s church scene. St. John’s Church in Würzburg really surprised me. From the outside, it looks elegant but understated, but stepping inside is where it truly shines. The interior is unlike many churches I’ve visited — there’s a modern yet warm feel, with clean lines, thoughtful lighting, and a layout that makes the space feel open and inviting. The design choices are unusual for a traditional church, which makes it fascinating to explore. The combination of contemporary elements with classic touches gives it a unique character, and it’s the kind of place that makes you pause and appreciate the care put into the architecture and furnishings. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it’s a smaller, quieter church compared to some of Würzburg’s more famous landmarks, so it doesn’t have the grandiose wow factor of larger cathedrals. That said, for anyone who enjoys discovering unusual interiors and experiencing a calm, contemplative atmosphere, St. John’s is well worth a visit. A beautiful, unusual church that offers a fresh perspective on Würzburg’s religious architecture — especially memorable for its distinctive interior.

St. John's is an Evangelical Lutheran church situated north of Rennweg and Residenz. It was constructed in 1895 and is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It was rebuilt after being destroyed during WWII bombings. Today what you see is a neo-Gothic tower with two slender pyramid structures fronting the church entrance. The interior is modern and modest with wood carving decoration and altar sculpture and stain-glass panes. It is an interesting church to see if sightseeing around Wurzburg and if you have some extra time after seeing Residenz and the Hofgarten grounds just to the south.

"... Seek peace and pursue it" Arresting architecture, this rebuilt church is an encapsulating space reminding us of the sanctity of life.

This church has an interesting story. I think the architecture is awesome, they used what remained after the destruction to build something new. There is also a book exchange opportunity inside.
