I finished my city registration without appointment within one hour of reaching there. Staffs at the entrance were very helpful and spoke fluent English with me. Everything finished very fast and smoothly.

Land of “Vogons”. I am overly stressed by this broken city. Sorry to compare, but I have a friend who did the same procedure in Düsseldorf AT THE SAME TIME as me (for something simple that they don’t need to send anything to Berlin), and for her it took 3 weeks, and for me it’s taking more than 3 months and still waiting. The calls never reach, the emails are never replied, and I am not sure if these people even exist in this world. They used to use Pandemic as the excuse, now use the war as their excuse. What’s next? Climate change? I seriously regret that I moved to Cologne.

I am giving it five stars as I have had a positive experience registering my address with no previous appointment. The clerks I encountered had been friendly and helpful to me and the process was very straightforward. Once inside, you state the purpose of your visit and get a ticket with a number to wait your turn. Do mentally prepare to wait for a while, although it depends on the day and the time you visit. I went there with no appointment midweek at around 11.30 and having the right papers I found on their website, was done in an hour. Leaving around 12.30 I even saw there was no line at the counter. For a public office, what more could one hope for? They even switched to English a few times at the counter when we didn't understand each other and hapily answered all my questions. It of course helps to know German at an intermediate level. On the other hand, I tried to book an online appointment and the earliest was 4 weeks from then. That was way too much.

The officers are very unfriendly and not helping. There is no number system you just go and give your passport or whatsoever and wait. You do not know how long you will wait and also with the recent inflow of refugees they are out of working capacity...
