Pension am Helenenwall

I booked a stay at Pension am Helenenwall (via Booking.com) for September 2025 with guaranteed payment. The property stated check-in between 14:00–18:00 — an unreasonably narrow time window that is impossible to meet for international travelers. I arrived at midnight after two flights and found the property locked, no staff, no key, no access. The host sent a short message a few hours before, but as I was flying I could not read it. There was no late check-in solution (no code, no key box, no reception). As a result, I was left alone at 00:00 in Cologne without accommodation, forced to find another hotel at extra cost. I lost both the money for this booking and had to pay again for emergency lodging. ⚠️ Tourists should be aware: the property does not guarantee access outside of the very limited check-in hours, and you may end up without a room despite having paid. I strongly advise avoiding this accommodation.

As can be seen in others photos this is dated accommodation but everything is still functioning and it's fine if you're just needing a place to sleep for a couple of nights. Not friendly for those mobility challenged though. Great location if you want to be near everything but not in the thick of it. Three stars for 2 reasons, firstly value for money, for what you get it was expensive, I was also there during December so it may be that the price was higher than normal. I also paid extra for a late check in but was still met with a little attitude when I arrived at 21.40. Secondly the heating had not been turned up in preparation for my arrival (it was on the winter setting) as I arrived fairly late it meant the first half of my night was spent shivering in bed.
