Regensburg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

The name ‘Neupfarrplatz’ translates as “New Parish Square,” It was here where Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation took hold in Regensburg during the 16th century, leading to construction of the New Parish Church. The expulsion of the Jews from Regensburg in 1519 made it possible to erect the new church, which was intended to be the centre of a Marian pilgrimage. In 1542, however, Regensburg converted to the Protestant-Lutheran denomination and the city council made the church the first Protestant parish church in the city. Today is the place that accomodates the Christmas Market of Regensburg with a lot of tourists visiting the area.

The church's location at Neupfarrplatz has a complex history. It was built between 1519 and 1540 on the site of the former Jewish Quarter and its destroyed synagogue after the Jewish community was expelled from the city. Originally planned as a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church (pilgrims came to see the "Beautiful Mary" image), the building became the first Protestant parish church in Regensburg in 1542, when the city converted to the Protestant-Lutheran faith. The church was intended to be a much larger, monumental Catholic church, but construction ceased due to a decline in pilgrimage revenue. Only the apse and the two towers of the original grand plan were realized. The church is small and if you are in the area, you can see it in about 5-10 minutes.

This church became one of my anchor spots whenever I visited Regensburg – whether in summer or winter, I always stopped by. Located right in the heart of the city, it’s hard to miss. Every time I came here, it brought me a sense of calm and pause in the middle of travel or errands. The architecture is simple yet striking, especially with the twin towers and big clock. The square around it is often quiet, making it perfect for a short reflective break. Interesting fact: This is Neupfarrkirche, built on the site of a former Jewish synagogue that was destroyed in the 15th century. The church’s location has deep layers of Regensburg’s complex history. It’s one of those places that grows on you – not loud, not crowded, but always there when you need a moment of stillness.

Neupfarrkirche is a 16th-century and active Protest Parish church located at Naupfarrplatz in the Old Town of Regensburg. It was built upon the site of the Jewish Quarter after the Jewish followers were expelled from the city in the early part of the century. This is a small single nave church with a modest Renaissance exterior and twin clock towers. The interior is subtle with Gothic features. The high altar which dates back to 1617 and surrounding paintings are worth a few minutes to enjoy. You'll find an interesting globe shaped candle holder near the front of the church as well as information in back relating to the old Jewish Quarter that predates the establishment of Neupfarrkirche and the square outside. Given the small size of the Old Town, it is convenient to stop by for a quick look around Neupfarrkirche while sightseeing around Regensburg. Give it a 5-10 minutes while you are in the area.

You can visit the church but you can not go up the towers.
