The Eigelsteintorburg is a fantastic piece of history standing proudly in a very lively part of the city. There is a free toilet inside which is great! The Architecture & History: The first thing you notice is the incredibly solid construction materials and imposing structure of this medieval city gate. It is surrounded by informative historical plaques that give great context to the site, though unfortunately for international travelers, they are only written in German. The Atmosphere & Events: The location is truly great and acts as a wonderful cultural hub, regularly hosting nice local events such as music concerts, seminars, and exhibitions inside and around the monument. The Surroundings: The immediate neighborhood is filled with plenty of nice outdoor terraces, cafes, and restaurants to sit and enjoy the view. However, be aware that there are no immediate grocery stores right by the square if you are looking to quickly grab snacks, and unfortunately, visitors tend to leave a bit of trash thrown on the ground around the monument. It is definitely worth a stop to admire the historic stonework and soak in the local culture!

We passed through the Eigelsteintorburg multiple times on our trip to Köln recently. Impressive piece of historical architecture. Unfortunately there was scaffolding around one section when we were there but it’s been maintained and built around beautifully over the years.

Hey everyone... The gate was built in the 13th century as part of the city's fortifications...through the gate you can reach the city center....behind the gate you can find everything from European cuisine to Asian cuisine, of course there was also fast food...But I was more interested in trains:-)

Pretty cool gate located about 1 km west of the Dom. There are a few gates located throughout the city, which are all reconstructed to look the same as originally built. This one looks pretty cool and is a key focus on a busy street with many bars and cafes. Great meeting point.
