Easy going, modern museum explaining Cologne’s history in a very short way, and additional aspects of the city, like freedom, religion, immigration, the river and the bridges. It’s a nice first impression when you start your Cologne trip!

This museum is really great. It tells the whole history of Cologne and has lots of interactive exhibits. I’d say it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to see everything. There’s also a small gift shop and lockers where you can store your belongings. The only downside is the reception—the staff weren’t very friendly. The museum is accessible to people with limited mobility and to the blind and deaf.

From being an ancient Roman colony to turning into a modern hub famous for beer, art, and tolerance - a visit to this museum is a great way to learn about Köln's history. We had a great time going through it.

I found this collection to be insightful. It was comprehensive yet small, complex yet also politically nuanced, and at times too defensive about certain groups and yet too readily dismissive of others. Having said that, the display reflects the historical realities that Germany continues to grapple with, and it provides an interesting historical journey. Well worth the visit.

Fantastic museum — start here first! Note: They’ve moved to a new location, but Google Maps still shows the old one, so double-check before you go. If you’re short on time (30–45 minutes), head straight to the first floor for a compact and engaging overview of the area’s history. But if you’ve got 90-120 minutes, settle in and enjoy the full experience — it’s worth it! Don’t forget to head upstairs to the gift shop — lots of fun and unique finds up there!
