Regensburg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. For directions in Regensburg, Google Maps and the DB Navigator app cover public transport times and walking routes, and most towns have well-marked cycle lanes. Local transport tickets must be bought or validated before boarding, and parking near busy streets is limited and metered.

One of the interesting squares in Regensburg is that of Neupfarrplatz. Historically, this was the location of a Jewish population that was expelled from the city in the early 16th-century. The quarter was cleared and synagogue demolished at that time. In its place, the Neupfarrkirche was built. This is a subtly decorated church that you can conveniently visit for a few minutes while sightseeing around Neupfarrplatz. Another interesting thing to see is the walk-in relief monument that is meant to represent a floor plan of the synagogue that once stood here. This is the work of Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan (2005) and is an intriguing and thought provoking monument worth spending a couple minutes to view. Lastly, we visited Neupfarrplatz during December and found a small but interesting Christmas market being held here. Numerous places selling traditional holiday foods, gluhwein (mulled wine) as well as holiday crafts and decorations. This made for a fun way to spend 15-20 extra minutes at the square.
