Very nice and modern places with mainly romantic and afterwards paintings, the collection for Caspar David Friedrich is nice, as well as the special exhibition of Albrecht Duerer.

The museum made a very positive impression on me. Although the special exhibition of works by Albrecht Dürer only partially appealed to me (I found the historical context more interesting than the art itself), the permanent exhibition is highly recommended for virtually any art lover. It covers various periods, from the Biedermeier era to Romanticism, Impressionism, and Realism. I particularly liked a work by Caspar David Friedrich that I hadn’t expected to see there.

We arrived after a 1 hour drive (each way) only to be told that most of the museum was closed for temporary work to be done. There had been no notice on the website. They suggested coming back on Sunday. We came back again on Sunday and were told that a few more rooms were open but others were still closed. We could see past a rope barrier that there was no work going on in any of them. The museum also charged us both times (at a discounted rate) as though we wanted to come twice! Still no info on the website. One gets the feeling that the people who run German museums and art galleries see visitors as a problem. The best solution is just to close as much of the museum as you can to visitors! Don’t tell them, of course, until they get there. For all that l, kudos to Georg Schäfer for putting together a charming selection of 19rh century German art including some wonderful works by Lieberman, Leibl and Menzel. I am told they have some Spitzwegs as well, but those were not on show.

This is an outstanding art museum, beautifully designed. There is a permanent collection of German art which has many highlights; it has its origins in the collection of the industrialist whose name the museum bears. The attraction for us was a special exhibition of works of Egon Schiele. The arrangement of the works was excellent, the choice of works of other artists to provide context and the commentaries provided equally so. A great experience! And the café was good too, and not overpriced (unlike what is often the case in art museums).
