München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around München is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

I visited Germany for a few days and really wanted to see this library. I needed to get some studying done and decided to go there, since it is not a sightseeing spot and I cannot access it just for taking a look at it. I was incredibly happy to find that it is completely free to enter and use without a time limit. In my home country it is difficult to find a free library to study in, even in university. The study room in the library is absolutely stunning, cozy, and perfectly quiet, as everyone respects each other's peace. While it is a working library, I think that it could be made a bit more accessible or clear for international tourists to navigate, it is an amazing place.

Tucked within Munich’s Neues Rathaus, the Juristische Bibliothek is a breathtaking architectural treasure that’s well worth the effort to visit. But take note: it is not open for casual visitors. Entry is only permitted through a pre-booked guided tour, so be sure to plan ahead. The tour meets just outside the Tourist Information Center, located a few meters from the main entrance of the Neues Rathaus. Our guide was outstanding, conducting the tour fluently in both German and English. She was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the library’s history and design. Once inside, we had ample time to take photographs. The reading room’s quiet grandeur did not disappoint. With its wrought-iron staircases, ornate woodwork, and book-lined walls stretching toward the ceiling, the setting felt almost cinematic, like a scene from a Wes Anderson film. The tour lasted approximately 30 minutes and was well-paced and informative. It gave us a real appreciation for the building’s role in Munich’s cultural and legal history. If you have an interest in libraries, historical interiors, or simply enjoy stepping into another era, this elegant detour deserves a spot on your itinerary.

The library opens only briefly from 4:30 to 4:40 for sightseeing , catering mainly to tourists attempting to snap quick photos. Unfortunately, the staff does not seem very accommodating, and people often find themselves crowded for the sake of capturing images.

It’s crazy they only let you in for 10 mins at the end of the day if you’re there to admire the famous staircase inside. The opening hours are from 9:00 to 16:30, if you wish to get in as a visitor make sure to be there a bit earlier than 16:30. There might be more people waiting to get in. Also make sure to bring a mask, as they will ask you to wear one to get in. It would be great if they could extend the visit periods and make it more accessible for people not affiliated to the library.

A wonderful place where is a fantastic atmosphere anytime. Just even sit there and enjoy the view or smell of the books. The time for the photo shooting is just 10 minutes and then they will close but even 10 is more than zero. Great experience, thank you 🤩
