Bamberg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Bamberg's long, pedestrian-friendly Grüner Markt (Green Market) is a wonderful place to spend a few hours shopping and people watching. Full of cafés and boutique stores, it's also home to a popular market (Mon-Fri), as well as many important historic structures, including the St. Catherine Hospital and Seminary, and the Gabelman fountain with its statue of Neptune. The best known historic landmark, however, is the Church of St. Martin (Pfarrkirche St. Martin). Built between 1686 and 1693, the city's only Baroque church dominates the square and contains many interesting features and artifacts.
