Würzburg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around Würzburg is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

An impressive and dominating fortress overlooking the town. While a steep walk up provides great views from some aspects, it is free to wander around the outer sections. The inner fortress is closed for renovations at time of visit. Moderate difficulty.

Great place and excellent exercise. You can pretend you are an invader or defender. Enjoy, I did, and of you have a travel bus/train pass, you can take it back down the hill.

A nice fortress with beautiful views. A walk down the sloped vineyards was just breathtaking (pun intended). No entry fee is needed for the fortress grounds and viewing points, though there are guided tours for a fee. The place is undergoing a long term renovation project due to which the main castle and fortress church is shut.

The Marienberg Fortress is situated above the Main River and city of Wurzburg. Originally the site of a Celtic fortification around 1100 BC, the first church was built at this site around 700 AD, followed by the large castle and fortifications that make up the buildings you see today which were constructed from the medieval period onward. Today, the Marienberg Fortress rests upon the hillside as an important landmark and place to visit in Wurzburg. Much of the castle complex seems to be closed to visitors right now for renovations. However there are a couple of museum sections within that you can visit as well as a green park area surrounding the fortress grounds, which you can walk and explore. Facing the Main there is a promenade section with panoramic views of the Old Town and river down below. On nice weather days, this is a delightful spot for views and a bit of exercise walking up the 100 metre ascent from the riverbank area below.

The fortress is accessible with public transport, there are buses from train station that will take you to the foothill of the fortress, reducing the distance of the climb needed. However, the fortress seems to be under major maintenance right now, thus if you have the option, please visit when the maintenance has completed. If the information I understand is correct, it is actually closed on Monday for visiting as well. But the surrounding of the fortress is still open for visitors. Nevertheless, the view of the fortress is even more breathtaking from across the Old Main Bridge.
