For a place to eat or drink in Germany, the questions that matter most are simple: is it open today (many restaurants keep a weekly Ruhetag), does it take reservations for dinner, and does the menu suit your group. Tipping is modest, rounding up or adding 5-10% when you pay, and while cards are accepted in most places, cash is still the safe choice at bakeries, Imbiss stands and beer gardens. Tap water is not served automatically, and bottles you take away carry a Pfand deposit.

Opening hours are published for 6 days a week. Typical hours are 11:30 am–2:30 pm. It is closed on Monday. Hours in Germany do change around public holidays, and many businesses close for a day or two over Christmas and Easter, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach Da Franco on 0851 30536; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions, and many businesses also take enquiries and bookings by e-mail or WhatsApp. More information is available on its website, restaurantdafranco.de.

With 4.2 out of 5 on Google from 401 reviews, it sits in the middle of the range for italienisch & pizza in Passau. German customers tend to review sparingly and critically, so a mid-range score with detailed comments is often a fair picture.

Passau is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around Passau is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

Excellent authentic Italian-style pizza with salad. No canned mushrooms here! Professional and friendly service. Good location. Good beer. Very reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

We got the lasagna. This is questionable homemade tomato sauce. It was orange like the frozen stuff. I've read that a lot of air or cream can turn tomato sauce orange, but it was very disappointing and tasteless. The gelato, however, was wonderful. The next table's pizza looked good. Oh well ...

We found this place on our walk in town. Friendly, professional staff! Really helpful, felt like they were happy to having us there. Service was quick. Ordered a bottle of wine and a pizza shared. Pizza (Hawaii) was delicious, hot at the time they served. Wine was nice and cold (in an ice bucket / Pinot Grigio). Prices were moderate, not overcharged! I highly recommend this place for anyone who wants a nice light meal in Passau!

Come see Tish for the best Aperol Spritz in Passau, as a bonus you'll find great pastas and pizzas. After a great meal top it off with some great gelato. The service is friendly and welcoming. If your stuffed full of wursts and schnitzels drop on for a lighter meal.
