Harburg (Schwaben) is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Perched high above the Wörnitz River along Germany’s iconic Romantic Road, Harburg Castle (Burg Harburg) is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in southern Germany. First documented in 1150 under the imperial Hohenstaufen dynasty, the stronghold later passed to the House of Oettingen-Wallerstein in 1299. Because it survived centuries of European conflicts virtually undamaged, stepping inside feels like stepping straight into a vibrant chapter of living history. Taking the guided tour of the complex is an absolute highlight and an unforgettable experience. The journey begins by crossing the outer courtyard toward the massive 12th-century stone keep (Bergfried), complete with 3-meter-thick defensive walls. Walking along the covered battlements (Wehrgang), you can spot original wooden loopholes (Holzaugen) used by medieval defenders, offering sweeping panoramic views over the red-tiled roofs of the town below. The tour leads through fascinating interior chambers, balancing raw medieval grit with aristocratic elegance. Highlights include the gloomy "Thieves' Tower" with its dark dungeon cells, the historic court chamber in the Kastenhaus, and the serene Castle Ch

Schloss Harburg is an absolutely stunning and incredibly well-preserved medieval castle that feels like a true step back in time. Walking through its ancient courtyards and along the imposing ramparts offers a genuine sense of history that is often lost in more commercialized tourist sites. The fortress strikes a perfect balance between its rugged defensive architecture and the refined, historical displays within, all set against a beautiful landscape that provides breathtaking views. It is a peaceful, authentic, and thoroughly impressive destination that captures the essence of medieval life, making it an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling through this part of Germany.

nice shop and souvenirs. we didn't try out the tour. when we decided to sit down in the restaurant, the air inside was insane, so we got seated outside after the rain. an employee then told us they are closing at 15:00 (we sat down at 14:53) because of some "problem" ...... but whatever. visit nice.

Beautiful castle more than a castle is a fortress that's why is called "Burg" in German. Very big structure nothing to see or allowed to see internally. The visit is totally outside but it is worth to visit to appreciate the structure.

This is an 11th-century castle that sits above the medieval village of Harburg. It is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses in Southern Germany. We stopped by during a brief stop at Harburg as part of our self-drive trip along the Romantic Route and were very impressed with our experience. Opening times are 10am to 5pm daily. Entry is €3.50 for adults which allows you to browse the interior courtyard grounds of the castle. Full access into the castle buildings is only available as part of Group Tours €5 per adult. Seems tours are mostly in German but English information is provided. The castle having avoided war damage throughout its past, very much resembles what it looked like during medieval times. We enjoyed wandering the interior courtyard and viewing the inside fortifications. A brochure is provided so you have an idea of what you are looking at. Unfortunately, the interior buildings for the most part can only be accessed by those on organised and guided tours. However, you can can still have access to St. Michael chapel which was nice. Views of Harburg Old Town down below which you will see from the castle are outstanding. Note: There is a car park ju
