For a place to eat or drink in Germany, the questions that matter most are simple: is it open today (many restaurants keep a weekly Ruhetag), does it take reservations for dinner, and does the menu suit your group. Tipping is modest, rounding up or adding 5-10% when you pay, and while cards are accepted in most places, cash is still the safe choice at bakeries, Imbiss stands and beer gardens. Tap water is not served automatically, and bottles you take away carry a Pfand deposit.

The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. On most of those days it is open 10 am–10 pm. It is closed on Sunday. As with most places, expect changes around public holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. You can reach Biergarten Viktualienmarkt on 089 29165993; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions, and many businesses also take enquiries and bookings by e-mail or WhatsApp. More information is available on its website, viktualienmarkt-muenchen.de.

On Google it holds a rating of 4.4 out of 5 from 6,301 reviews, which is a strong result for a biergärten in München and suggests consistent service.

München is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around München is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

The biggest advantage here is definitely the ultra-central location and the constant flow of people—it’s practically 100% tourists and business folks looking to balance out their lifestyles with a heavy pork knuckle and a mass of beer. Locals only end up here if they have no other option or need a super quick bite on the go. The biggest downside is that the menu is strictly tailored to high volume and crowd-pleasers. Tables need to turn over quickly—ideally multiple times a night—so almost everything is prepped in advance. But the ultimate dealbreaker? No Kaiserschmarrn! Since it has to be made fresh and takes a while to prepare—I asked, and that was the direct answer—they simply don't take the time for it. That's just not their concept, it seems. Don't get me wrong: if you're looking for the traditional Bavarian food your guidebook told you not to miss when in Munich, you won't be disappointed. You'll easily get your 1,000+ kcal and leave wondering how Germans can survive eating like this every day (which, by the way, they don't—just as they don't wear Lederhosen and Dirndl in daily life). Fine for a quick, central pitstop, but don't expect a relaxed, authentic Bavarian ex

We were two couples and we were a short walk from our hotel so we went looking for a cold beer and a pretzel. Our waiter was fantastic as this is a busy beer garten. Food excellent and comes quick. Loved it and would definitely look to visit again.

Food was okay, not anything special but what really bothered us was the service. The waiter came over to us and asked if we were ready and we said no because it had been 5 minutes. Came back 5 minutes later and asked again and once again not ready, he then said ”but the drinks at least”. My girlfriend ordered a fanta and I usually don’t have anything so said ”no all good”. He then did a weird face like he was surprised/disgusted and just said ”okay”. Then we ordered food and while we waited a woman very angrily screamed at some people sitting down at a table. The whole vibe of the restaurant and the waiters was very bad. Would absolutely not recommend if you want a nice experience.

What a great spot to sit in the sun and grab a beer. Food was good beer amazing. I think th tables around the outside are self service with the tables with cloths are service. The self service was quick and easy but cash only at the bar I thing food took card. Defo worth a stop and its only a 5 min walk from marienplatz.
