Augsburg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. Getting around Augsburg is easiest by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, all covered by the Deutschlandticket that is valid on local and regional transport across Bayern and beyond; parking in city centres is scarce and either paid or limited by Parkscheibe, so public transport or a bike is usually quicker than driving.

Must-visit place. Step inside Augsburg Cathedral (Dom Mariä Heimsuchung) and you walk through living strata of time. From the Carolingian foundations laid under Bishop Simpert around 807, through the Ottonian core rebuilt after the collapse of 994 and consecrated in 1065 — the only largely intact Ottonian cathedral still standing in Germany — the building refuses to erase its past. Romanesque walls and the western crypt still hold the quiet gravity of the early Middle Ages. High above the southern nave glow the five Prophet windows (Jonah, Daniel, Hosea, David, Moses) from the late 11th or early 12th century: the oldest surviving large-scale figurative stained-glass cycle in the world. Nearby once stood the great bronze doors of the same era (now safely kept in the Diocesan Museum), their 35 reliefs weaving Old Testament scenes into a meditation on sin and redemption. Then the Gothic century arrives. From the 1330s onward the cathedral expands — double side aisles, soaring rib vaults, and the mighty eastern choir begun in 1356 and finally consecrated in 1431. The south portal (c. 1360–1380) unfolds the entire life of Mary in stone; the north portal of 1343 answers with Annunciation

Augsburg Cathedral is situated along Frauentorstraße in Old Town and is open from 7am to 6pm daily to visitors. It was constructed between 1043-65 in Romanesque manner and upon the grounds of an earlier 8th-century church. The cathedral was given Gothic features during the 14th and 15th centuries and later played a pivotal role during conflicts with Martin Luther which spurred the Lutheran Movement and Protestant Reformation. The exterior of the church is nice to see, including 62-metre tower (1075), detailed entrance portals The interior is very impressive and worth spending a bit of time to view. You'll find tall nave and aisles with ribbed vaulted ceilings, attractive altars and beautiful stained glass windows some of very oldest in Germany again dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. There are nearly 1000 yr old murals as well as artworks by 16th-century Master Hans Holbein amongst other interesting things to see. We very much enjoyed our visit and time spent within Augsburg Cathedral. It is a place with much history and numerous interesting things to see and learn about. Well worth allowing 30-45 minutes of time while sightseeing around Old Town.

The Augsburger Dom (Augsburg Cathedral), dedicated to the Visitation of Mary, is a monumental landmark rooted in the 8th century, with its core foundations dating back to a Romanesque basilica consecrated in 1065. Over centuries, it evolved, gaining a massive late-Gothic western choir by 1431, transforming it into a spiritual fortress that withstood the storms of the Reformation. Architecturally, the cathedral presents an imposing asymmetric profile dominated by two towering twin Romanesque spires and magnificent bronze portals from the 11th century. Inside, its most breathtaking treasure is the collection of Prophet Windows (Prophetenfenster) from the early 12th century, widely revered as the oldest stained glass windows still in their original location worldwide. The cathedral also preserves exquisite masterworks, including a magnificent altarpiece painted by Hans Holbein the Elder. Stepping into this vast, historic sanctuary evokes a profound sense of temporal distortion. Gazing up at the ancient prophets glowing in medieval hues, the true human value lies in realizing how many generations have sought solace within these very stone walls. It inspires a deep reverence for the a

The Augsburg Cathedral was a great visit. The mix of very old and newer parts makes it interesting to explore, and the famous stained‑glass windows are beautiful to see up close. The inside feels calm and peaceful, and the whole place has a strong sense of history. We really enjoyed walking through it. It is free of charge to enter.

It is impossible to express the atmosphere with words. Everyone must feel it for themselves. It's very old and massive cathedral not very far from city hall. It is home to oldest surviving stained glass. The paintings with some dating back to 11th century are authentic. Be aware that it closes at 6.
