Bamberg is in Bayern, in the south, the country's industrial powerhouse around Munich and Stuttgart with the Alps and the Black Forest on the doorstep; winters bring snow and the occasional warm Föhn wind, summers are the warmest in Germany, and living costs are the highest. German addresses put the street name before the house number, followed by the five-digit postcode and the town, as in "Marienplatz 8, 80331 München". The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Such a great place to visit. Breathtaking views over bamberg and surrounding area. A must for a lazy Sunday with friends. The cafe serves hot meals the whole family will enjoy, not to mention the great beer selection. You can take the bus from town with a short walk to the tower or if you feel energetic enough you can walk up. It's quite the walk so I suggest the bus up and a beautiful walk down.

5 big Stars A beautiful castle with breathtaking views over Bamberg Altenburg Castle is a must-visit when exploring Bamberg. Perched high above the city, the castle offers spectacular panoramic views of Bamberg’s historic rooftops and the surrounding Franconian countryside. The walk up is well worth it, with peaceful forest paths and a wonderful atmosphere along the way. The castle itself has a fascinating medieval character, with impressive stone walls, a historic tower, and charming details that bring its long history to life. The combination of architecture, scenery, and tranquility makes it a perfect place for photography, a relaxing stroll, or simply enjoying a piece of Franconian history. A highlight is standing at the top of the tower and taking in the incredible views — one of the best viewpoints in the region. Highly recommended for visitors to Bamberg looking for something beyond the city center. A true gem above one of Germany’s most beautiful towns.

We loved visiting Altenburg. The hike through the forest from Wildensorg was peaceful and beautiful, and climbing the stairs to the top of the tower was absolutely worth it. The views over Bamberg and the surrounding area were amazing. It felt like a perfect mix of nature, history, and adventure for our family.

Great 30-40 min walk from Bamberg: nice old castle, free entry, quiet and cool plus spectacular views from the tower (1 eur fee). There are lovely views of Bamberg from the field path too and benches to enjoy them.

We went on a Sunday. Jan 18, 2026 Still winter. We were staying at the old town in Bamberg. You can walk to the castle from there, drive, or take public transportation. We took public transportation and leaves you half way to the castle. We did have to walk into a neighborhood and into the woods, 100% worth it, walking through nature and the icy pathways was fun. It is in a hill, so you will need some breaks if you're not into hiking. The entrance is free. You need to pay €1 to go into the tower. We went on Sunday around 12pm it was not busy at all. On the way back we walked back to the old town and the scenario was beautiful.
