Het Balchem - huis was oorspronkelijk een smederij die in 1670 door de Keulse brouwmeester en wethouder Heinrich Deutz werd gekocht en in 1676 werd uitgebreid. Volgens de legende wilde Deutz een huis bezitten van waaruit hij naar de Rijn kon kijken om de koopvaardijschepen te bekijken. Deutz breidde het huis uit in een uitgebreide barokstijl , voegde een rijk versierde gevel toe aan het voorheen eenvoudig functioneel gebouw en voerde binnen talrijke renovatiewerken uit. Op het muuranker staat het opschrift " Soli deo Gloria " ( enige God voor glorie ). De erker boven de toegangsdeur is een statussymbool voor de eigenaar, waarvoor hij speciale toestemming moest krijgen. Het is een zeer zeldzame getuigenis van het oude stadsbeeld van Keulen. Op de begane grond en de tussenverdieping opende Deutz het restaurant " Zum Golden Bären " als ontmoetingsplaats voor raadsleden en gildemeesters. Heinrich Deutz stierf in 1697 , zijn erfgenamen zetten de herberg voort onder de naam " Deutzer Brauhaus ". In de jaren nadien wisselden de eigenaren veelvuldig. In 1884 kwam het in handen van de broers Balchem die er een brouwerij van maakten. Johann Balchem bouwde in 1937 een moderne brouweri
