​Located right along the bustling Rhine promenade in the Old Town (Altstadt), the Pegel Köln (Cologne Rhine Gauge) is a fascinating piece of functional history that is well worth a quick look while strolling by the river. History & Function: Housed in a charming, round historic tower building that dates back to the late 19th century, this station has been meticulously measuring the water level of the Rhine for generations. It features a prominent, large clock-like indicator on the outside that displays the current water depth in meters and centimeters—a vital piece of data for the heavy shipping traffic passing through the city. ​The Location: It sits perfectly along the scenic pedestrian path, making it a natural landmark to stop by. During our walk along the Rhine promenade in Cologne, we stopped by Pegel Köln, the city’s historic water-level gauge tower. Standing right on the riverbank near the Hohenzollern Bridge, it offered both a great photo opportunity and a quick peek into how locals monitor the Rhine’s changing water levels.

Only a small old clock tower by Rhine river in Koln. I cannot see what interesting about this landmark.
