Such a masterpiece. Beautiful and highly recommended. If you want nice pictures go early morning or evening time. It’s less busy. Also the street in front of the cathedral had a great view for taking pictures. Also definitely visit it at night because it’s different experience.

Inside Cologne Cathedral, behind the high altar, there’s a reliquary that changed the entire history of this city. The Shrine of the Three Kings is the reason Cologne Cathedral exists. When Frederick Barbarossa brought the relics of the Magi from Milan in 1164, Cologne became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in medieval Europe. The shrine is why they started building. Everything else — the 600 years of construction, the twin spires, the UNESCO status — follows from this gold box behind the altar. The object itself is extraordinary: medieval metalwork at a scale and quality that you don’t see often. Gold and silver over wood, filigree, enamel, hundreds of gems. It’s approximately 2 meters long. The figures on the exterior are prophets, apostles, the Magi themselves. The craftsmanship is the kind that makes you reconsider what “craft” means. Most people walk past it on their way to look at the windows. Don’t.

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is a towering masterpiece of Gothic architecture located in Cologne, Germany. Construction began in 1248 and was completed over 600 years later in 1880. The cathedral is renowned for its immense twin spires, which dominate the city’s skyline, and its intricate facade. Inside, it houses priceless treasures, including the Shrine of the Three Kings, believed to contain relics of the Biblical Magi, and stunning stained glass windows. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cologne Cathedral is one of the most visited landmarks in Europe, symbolizing Germany’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

Not sure why this is a separate attraction as it’s inside the Cologne Cathedral. The shrine is a reliquary believed to contain the bones of the three magi who visited Jesus. “Borrowed” by Babarossa from the Church of Saint Eustorgio in Milan, it’s been in Cologne since the 12th century. The exterior decoration of gold and silver gilds are a masterpiece of medieval metalwork. As with most shrines, the figures are a mixture of prophets, apostles and Jesus. If you go on the guided tour with Dom Forum, you’ll get to visit the high Altar and get a better look at the shrine.
